Harvard also was second, only to Stanford, in starting salaries. HBS was also third best in the magazine’s poll of alumni from 2008 to 2010. Harvard stayed at the top as a result of a number one ranking from corporate recruiters, a survey that asks companies to name the programs that best deliver the skills sought in MBA hires. Employer surveys account for 35% of a school’s score, alumni surveys account for another 30% and a combination of current student surveys (15%), salary rankings (10%) and job placement (10%) together account for the remaining 35 percent of the final score. Businessweek said that nearly 10,000 MBA alums responded to the alumni survey and 9,461 MBA graduates filled out the student satisfaction surveys this year. The rankings methodology used by Businessweek involves weighting each of five principle factors. Haas School of Business lost three places falling to 11th place. Columbia Business School climbed back into the top ten by rising two places from 11th last year. Wharton was ranked 2nd and MIT Sloan 3rd (each climbed 4 spots since 2016), Chicago Booth 4th and Stanford 5th (dropped 3 spots since 2016).
